Hey NBC, SHUT UP!!

So, it's Olympics time again, and again I have the same old complaint about the television coverage. NBC regularly insists on going away from the actual Olympic games to show these incredibly boring supposed "human interest" stories which are never very interesting and in last night's primetime coverage, didn't even mention humans.

Hey, NBC, you paid millions to have exclusive coverage of the games, you're losing millions on the damn games, you might as well show the Olympic games themselves instead of whatever random crap you make Mary Carillo do.

One other complaint I have is that if NBC is planning to show any of a specific event in their primetime coverage, they will show none of it during their day coverage, or post any of it online. They will, however, provide live updates and a live blog on what's happening in that event, as well as provide a full written recap of said event. Now, I can understand ratings and I know why they want to force viewers to sit through hours of talking and events they don't care about to get to the one they do, but then why do they post a live blog and live results? Granted, this is information one can find almost anywhere online, but why is the station forcing me to watch at night to see what happened during the day, telling me what happened during the day?

Also, they might not show all of an event in primetime so (as an example) if you want to watch every run in freestyle snowboarding (which I do) you're probably not going to, but you can read how everyone does in the live blog.

  1. In NBC eyes, Olympic ratings are driven by women, and they beleive said women are interested in the other stories (polar bears, really? That is what you are giving me to watch? Really?) so instead of 3 hours of continous sports action (which I would enjoy) you get two hours of coverage and one of crap each night, which sucks for us real sports fans, but since the ratings are so strong, they maybe right about this. Or the coverage just pisses off everyone, and they still watch to see their faavorite sports, keeping the ratings up, which allows NBC to believe that their presentation style is working. This belief about women is also why we see all the figure skating we can stomach (too much in my eyes) and if you enjoy the other sports, you only get snippets or have to Tivo it during the day and watch it at night. Or for someone like you who wants to watch all of one event, you are SOL. You're right, they could show all that event on one of their other channels or online, and why they don't is a little baffling. As for a live blog but no posted results, that doeesn't make a lot of sense, but since ESPN and Fox Sports are both going to reveal who wins as it happens, I guess they are just trying to keep up with the others

  2. NBC does post the results online, as part of the live blog. As for the whole ratings thing, we get tricked into watching the crap we don't care about or pisses us off (like the polar bears) because we have to wait and see when the event we want to watch comes up, or at least, as much of it as they want to show which itself is based on some vague, preconception of what people want to see. God only knows what information that's based on, since we have to sit through stuff we don't like to catch what we do.

    Basically, NBC sucks.

  3. Don't forget, guys, NBC tried setting up channels that you could pay for to watch all of pretty much whatever you wanted, and that failed miserably, so the current set up is what we will be stuck with until ESPN buys the Olympics and ruins it by hiding the events you really want to see on ESPN Deportes and ESPN Classic. Plus Chris Berman would probably be the main host and no one could take more than a couple nights of that.
